An in-depth study of the life safety and fire protection aspects of a building and/or life safety code as they relate to a project includes: egress, fire suppression, manual and automatic fire alarm requirements, height and area limitations and modifications, occupancy/use limitations, and passive fire protection (fire rating and construction of walls, floor/ceiling assemblies, shafts, and penetrations).

Fire Resistance:

Rhino’s engineers can recommend passive fire protection techniques and endothermic construction materials such as gypsum, concrete and other cementitious products, and various plasters. Intumescents (i.e., substances that swell as a result of heat exposure) can be used for such applications as firestopping, fireproofing, gasket, and window casings.

Structural Fire Protection Analysis & Design:

Perhaps the oldest method of fire protection, structural fire protection contributes when other systems fail, limiting fire spread to protect property and allow occupants time to escape. With computer-based modeling as well as small- and full-scale testing capabilities, Rhino can ensure this important aspect of building performance is not overlooked.

Code Consulting:

Building codes change constantly. Every state and often every county has different requirements, as does almost every government agency. Whether it’s the International Building Code (IBC), NFPA Codes, Department of Defense Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), or GSA Facilities Standards, Rhino’s engineers are familiar with the codes and can provide interpretation and guidance through the tangle of often-conflicting requirements. Our engineers can assist in working with code authorities to resolve conflicting issues, obtain code variances, and develop equivalences or alternative design approaches that preserve design intent yet satisfy code intent.
